Rob and Richard, Wow wow wow. You made our stay in Rio more wonderful than we could have imagined! You really made us feel like family. OK so some favourite moments: feeding the turtle poolside, sipping caipirinhas in the evening, secret waterfalls in the National park (the tour was amazing!), and of course your lovely sense of humour and smiles. We will miss you guys back in Canada.

We changed to O Veleiro Bed and Breakfast from a hostel we didn’t like and it was the best we could do. Everything was perfect: the room, the bathroom, the cleanliness, the breakfast, the garden… and the best of all, Rob and Richard’s hospitality and conversation.
It’s so great to arrive to this comfortable place after a day in the wild Rio, to cool down in the pool after a really hot day, and to relax in the garden with the wild forest’s sounds.
I’ll recommend this place to everyones who’ll visit Rio.

After staying 1 night in a windowless backpackers room, O Veleiro B&B became our personal refuge the nights after walking the hot streets of Rio – and our source for amazing breakfasts the mornings before. The perfect shelter for exploring an wonderful city. Rob & Richard made the experience even more enjoyable.
    Saludos desde Chile!

I spent a week in O Veleiro and felt very much at home and well cared for. The pick-up service from the airport worked perfectly. The rooms are clean and tastefully furnished. The two owners Rob and Richard are incredibly friendly, helpful and always have good ideas for excursions and advises for dos and donts when moving around this big city. The house is situated beautifully in the green city jungle and after a busy day of sightseeing you can relax in the garden at the small swimming pool and cool down. The next metro station is a 15 minutes walk down the hill to Praia de Botafogo. I never felt unsafe on my way to of from the metro, even when I walked it later in the evening. I can recommend this place to everyone traveling to Rio, also to women traveling on their own!

I totally enjoyed my stay at the O Veleiro Bed and Breakfast in Botafogo. Having stayed at Bed and Breakfasts in the States, I wasn’t sure what to expect in Brazil. I must say that this was one of the BEST Bed and Breakfasts that I’ve ever stayed at!

I agree with one of the previous reviews about the feeling of going to a lovely and peaceful place after spending the day at Praia Botafogo Shopping (located a nice walk away from the place), at the beach or just walking around the City. You could totally feel and see the difference from being in the City to a peaceful location with a homestyle feeling.

The landscaping is beautiful and the bedrooms were very clean and nicely kept. The house has these balconies where you over look some beautiful views. If you look very closely you may even see the arm of Christ from the balcony. They gave you access to their DVD collection which was great seeing “Cidade de Deus” after spending the day at the Favela tour (recommended by them) which was awesome.

I always looked forward to the breakfast. It was a great start to the day — sometimes I will be full until way after 1PM. They always had great hot coffee and selection of different bread (wheat, raisin), fresh fruit, fresh orange juice and a delicious banana drink. You also had your choice of lunch meats and cheese, Cereal and milk, and we had a delicious freshly made cake one morning. Nice healthy breakfast!

The owners of O Veleiro were out of the country for most of our stay; however, their staff, did an EXCELLENT job with making us feel welcomed. They were very helpful and professional. They recommended great restaurant to eat and places to go visit. Thanks to them we were able to plan our vacation and do as much as possible in the 5 day we were there.

We were also fortunate to meet Robin before we left to thank him for everything and to let him know that we had a very pleasant stay and that he had a very lovely place away from home. Definitely recommend this place to everyone…

What a charming spot! Rob is a warm and welcoming host and shared many tips and ideas to enhance our stay in Rio. Was a treat to find this home in the heart of Rio – it is clean, inviting and relaxing. Our family of 4, mom, dad, 2 kids (12&13) enjoyed our stay. Breakfast is great and the location is close to key attractions, in a safe area. We would return again! Recommend this B&B to travellers looking to experience some of the local flavor and enjoy discovering hidden gems that lie off the beaten path.

We spent six nights in this wonderful bed and breakfast in Rio de Janeiro. The location is great; the B&B is quietly set on a hillside of Botafogo and surrounded by tropical plants and trees. It feels like a serene oasis in this exciting but hectic city. Still, it is an easy access to all major attractions and Botafogo metro station is only a 15- minute walk away.

We had booked the large en-suite room with its private patio and sitting area where we enjoyed our dinners at nights we didn’t want to go out. It was really great to sit in the garden with its lush vegetation! (and small residents – the turtle and monkeys). The rooms are very colourful and charmingly decorated, giving the whole place a tropical and South American ambience. The breakfasts were great; they were situated in the common living room where you could easily chat with other guests. The breakfast table included lots of tropical fruits, succos (fresh fruit drinks; we loved the one with the banana and coconut!) and homemade jellies

Last but not least, we would like to thank our hosts Rob and Richard for their hospitality, help and advice on several occasions. You really made us feel at home! When we come back to Rio we will certainly stay in your bed and breakfast again.

Allez y. Vraiment ça les vaut.

This is the place I miss the most when my life is grey and boring. Rio is the city of my heart and O Veleiro such a wonderful place that opens all doors to it.
What did I do in O Veleiro?
    - Stayed there with my whole family on a long trip
    - Met my old mother there again after months of traveling.
    - Came back again for carnival.
    - Danced all night and had a larger-than-life experience.
    - Was saved from horrible things by Rob and Richard.
    - Danced the samba by the pool and drank too many caipirinhas
    - Never stopped smiling, and finally…
    - Wrote a book about it when I came home (read it at O Veleiro)!

BEST place we stayed during our 2 week vacation in Brazil/Peru, and that is saying a lot!! Rob & Richard are fabulous hosts, the location is perfect, and the relaxed atmosphere can’t be beat.

We are home now (recuperating from our holiday!) and when I close my eyes and I can dream I’m back in Rio…

    Thanks so much!

We stayed at O Veleiro in June 2009, it was one of our hihlights when visiting Rio.. great hosts, spectacular views and in a relative quiet and nice area of Rio, whilst you can be in the busy downtown in 10 minutes. thanks for the wonderful stay!

We stayed in 2010 with Richard and Robin and have just passed on their address to friends. Feel very envious of them when I went back to the website and remembered the fantastic stay we had – a jewel. If only Rio was closer to the grey north of England. Thanks Guys for a memorable time with you – good food, great company and a beautiful home.

Tudo bem!!! Reading the comments, it is good to see that nothing has changed! I spent 9 days at “O Veleiro” and would recommend the B&B to anyone who is visiting Rio de Janeiro.

    -The location:
Just up the hill from Botafogo (between Flamengo and Copacabana) with connections to all parts of the city by bus or metro and on foot to Sugar Loaf.

    -The hospitality:
Great, friendly, polite, helpful and often witty hosts, and the much appreciated advice from a native English speaker on where to go and where NOT to go!

-The cleanliness and the tranquility after a long, busy and noisy day touring the bustling 12 million metropolis. Sitting by the small pool, drinking a cold beer from the bar and watching the neighbourhood monkies and exotic birds in the cooling, shady trees.

    -The tours.
The tours were magnificent and I was grateful for the tips and information. Moreover the ease and security of visiting Rio and the surroundings with people in the know! I fondly remember my first Feijoada after one of the tours! And my trip to Lapa.

    The breakfast:
I still dream of the breakfasts! Fresh fruit, amazing tropical juices and healthy bread and cereals to start the day in what I think is the most beautiful city in the world.

…..and the rented bicycle (don’t know if you are still doing that!). For me it was an excellent way of getting around and visiting the city.

For anyone visiting Rio and who favours B&B to hotels, “O Veleiro” is a fantastic place to stay for all of the above mentioned reasons. The price-performance ratio was quite satisfactory. I hope to return to Rio and will definitely stay there again.
    Obrigado Richard & Robin

Rob & Richard are the most friendly & considerate B&B hosts I have ever met in South America or Europe. Their place is the perfect residence in Rio. Majestic views of the city and very close by to Metro subway or busses. Easy walking distance to Botafogo neighbourhood, which is an incredible area to walk through. These guys really know how to make you feel relaxed and comfortable. Both of them are so knowledgeable about Rio. I was there 5 days and I must come back because I didn’t get to see everything that is there to experience. The rooms are very clean and quite comfortable. The breakfast served is the best I have ever been offered in a B&B. Do yourself a favour and stay at this place.

Gostoso! Delicious! This applies to the breakfasts, warm hospitality, clean and comfortable rooms, peaceful location in the rainforest, proximity to the metro and buses, with shopping, restaurants and bars just down the hill. The location is perfect for someone wanting to see birds, monkeys, a pet turtle, flowers and shrubs from a beautiful, comfortable and large house after a stimulating day in one of the world’s most exciting cities. Thank you to Rob, Richard, Patricia, Wendo and Cosme. Muito legal!

A wonderful stay and very possibly unlike any B&B you´ll ever have stayed in. A gorgeously decorated interior with lots of room, clean and fresh rooms every day, a breakfast buffet with fresh bread, cheeses, meats, jams, home made cakes, smoothies, tea and coffee. An exotic courtyard for relaxing in with hammocks, a pool an honesty bar and a breezy conservatory for shade from the sun.

with all the advice and knowledge you could possibly want and won´t find in the guideboks, Rob and Richard have their fingers firmly on the pulse of Rio. Worth it´s weight in gold.

Thank you both for an amazing week in Rio! Would never have been the same without all your help and advice for Rio and for our South America tour :)

We both cannot wait to get back and stay with you again for the Carnival, see you soon!!

    Dear Richard and Robin,

We were very pleased to stay in your lovely Bed and Breakfast, everything went fine, both the room experience and the amenities.
My parents also enjoyed, especially the fact of watching live Brazil beating Spain at Maracana.

    Thanks a lot!

We stayed with Rob and Richard in August 2015 with our 10 year old grandson. It was a perfect way to begin our Brazil visit. The hospitality at the B&B was terrific and the food and room excellent. Rob escorted us around Rio and outskirts for 2 days and it was worth every penny. His knowledge is vast and he kept all 3 of us engaged. Our grandson continues to talk about the trip (a highlight was the folk art museum). Now to get back…
